Walking in the Light of God: Walking as a Community of Righteousness

glory-of-the-lordDuring the season of Epiphany, the church celebrates walking in the light of God revealed in Christ. The Sixth Sunday after Epiphany, we remember that Jesus calls us to a righteousness that exceeds that of the Scribes and the Pharisees. In the sections of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-6) he begins to detail what that righteousness looks like.

Jesus uses the formula “You have heard it said… but I say to you…” to deepen and broaden our understanding of the Law. He does this not to a demand slavish adherence to a stricter standard, not to make us over as super Scribes and Pharisees, rather to throw us back on the grace of God which forms us into a community of righteousness. It is our relationship with God that allows us to practice justice, to live with compassion and to walk in humility. We walk in the light of Christ; we walk together as a community of righteousness.
