The Wedding Garment

The parable of the wedding banquet (Matthew 22:1-14) is another difficult parable to hear. It becomes very pointed and very personal. It takes us to task for the numerous excuses we use to evade the call of God to us. The “wedding garment” spoken of in this parable, many contemporary scholars agree, was provided by the host of the party. There was no excuse for the guest to be found without one, except their own stubborn refusal to abide by social decorum. How often do we stubbornly refuse to don the garment of God’s righteousness provided for us at our Baptism and the claims it makes on us, instead stubbornly clinging to our own self-righteous claims and behavior?
