The Parable of the Deluded Tenants

green grapeThe parable of the tenants and the vineyard (Matthew 21:33-46) is a difficult parable to hear. Does one identify with the leisure-classed landlord who gives the tenants everything they need to be successful and then takes his ease, only making his presence known when the rent is due? Or does one identify with the tenants who raise the crop by the sweat of their brow and then are expected to give it up to the absentee landlord who has not hitherto bothered to even tweet out a shout of encouragement? In the end, the landlord is owed his due and the tenants outrageous behavior is exposed as lacking in gratitude and delusionally self-centered. So we are exposed when we lose our perspective of gratitude toward God, who gives us everything we need for daily life.
