Christian Congregations

Sermon Synopsis for Sunday, September 13th, 2015

Image-1James, the brother of Jesus, was in charge of the new Christian congregation in Jerusalem. This was a task that was not simple and in the epistle lesson for today he draws the congregations attention to the fact that they have several issues which need addressed.

The first was that they were not very good about taking care of the homeless and the hurting folks in the community but particularly they were not diligent in caring for the widows and the orphans.

A second problem was that they were very interested in people’s status from a wealth point of view and had a tendency to welcome wealthy folks into the congregation but not the poor.

But the biggest problem in the congregation was that people were not careful about the use of their tongues. They were engaging in gossip and speaking in negative terms about member of the congregation and the community. James reminded them that the law proposed in Leviticus and reiterated by Jesus was the Shema. Love The Lord Your God With All your heart and with all your mind and with all your strength and your neighbor as yourself.

Interestingly enough, these same issues have great impact on Christian congregations throughout the world as well as in Karnes City and area.

The tongue is most helpful when it is used to Praise God and Speak Words of Love And Encouragement for all people in the congregation and the community.

Have a great week and speak well of your neighbor and fellow members whenever given the opportunity.
